Bournemouth
School is a selective Grammar school for boys. We pride ourselves on
providing an excellent all-round education which prepares our
students (currently around 1055, including 350 in the Sixth Form)
for the widest possible range of careers. Whilst we celebrate the
traditions that come from more than 100 years existence (the school
was founded in 1901), we are constantly looking for new challenges
so that we can improve the experiences gained by the students and
broaden the range of opportunities available to them.
We
have a wide range of facilities, including a very well-resourced
library, an excellent art and technology block, outstanding sports
facilities, thirteen science laboratories and extensive
communications technology which includes a site-wide wireless
network and interactive whiteboards in most teaching rooms. In 2007
we opened a new 9-classroom block which houses our mathematics and
R.S. departments.
The
school acquired specialist Language College status in September
2000. Languages offered, both to pupils and the community at large,
include French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese,
Mandarin Chinese and Arabic. A wide range of opportunities are
available for pupils and staff to extend their language skills,
including an extensive and long-established exchange programme.
As a
High Performing Specialist School we have (from April 2009) been
designated as a Training School, with specific emphasis on the
teaching of Gifted and Talented pupils.
We
were one of the first schools in the country to gain Trust status,
being a founder member of the South West Academic Trust. Currently
the Trust comprises five member schools (with two further schools
wishing to join) and the University of Exeter.
We
are particularly proud of the extensive range of extra-curricular
activities which are available to our students. We are one of a very
small number of state schools which has a Combined Cadet Force (CCF)
contingent.
We have our own Royal Navy recognised Scout Group that is open to
members of the school and BSG, their siblings and boys with
confirmed places at the school. Sport is a particular strength, with representative teams
competing regularly at all age-groups in the main sports. We are
also proud of the exceptional quality of our musicians; over 200
pupils have instrumental tuition and also take an active part in the
musical life of the school, which offers a wide range of ensembles
from gamelan to classical to jazz, with numerous rock groups always
keen to perform. The Big Band regularly perform around the local
area.
Those of us who work in the school believe that we are privileged to
belong to this learning community, in which able pupils are
challenged to excell. We encourage those interested in joining us
to visit the school, so as to understand the very special ethos
which exists.
