Art

Art is a fundamental element of education. The opportunity for students to have an art and design education enables them to build upon their own understanding and appreciation of aesthetics and the visual arts. Art stimulates creativity and imagination through the integral elements of line, colour, form, pattern and texture. The act of using a wide range of materials whilst referring to the work of relevant artists, crafts persons and designers allows the development and communication of a highly personal and individual visual language.

Philosophy
The department believes in the potential of all students; each individual is encouraged by staff to develop existing skills and actively explore the materials and opportunities offered to them at Bournemouth School. The department seeks to address the issues or roles and place of Art and Design both in the outside world and within the context of the community, the school and its pupils. The department seeks to provide an environment which gives the student as much exposure to traditional and contemporary art as possible, experiencing works first hand whenever able.

The Aims of the Art Department are to:

  • Create an interesting and stimulating environment.

  • Encourage an open – ended approach to creative work.

  • Engender respect for the ideas and the work of others.

  • Encourage discussion and the sharing of ideas whilst respecting the views of others.

  • Provide a wide range of resources so that individuals can discover their particular strengths and develop self confidence through the acquisition of diverse skills.

  • To enable students to acquire practical, aural, physical and social skills combined with an appreciation of the work of others.
  • To promote an interest in the Arts which will continue into adult life.
  • To enable students to assess their own work through dialogue with staff and discover ways forward on an individual basis.
  • To help students understand their course expectations and work to the best of their abilities at all times.
