History
In the History department we are proud of being able to bring the
subject to life via a variety of teaching approaches, including role
play, discussion, debate, drama, group work and use of modern
technologies and interactive whiteboards, backed up by a variety of
resources on the school’s VLE. All pupils study History at Key Stage
3, with take-up at GCSE and A level very high. We are based along
the front of the school, with storage facilities and an office at
either end.

In year 7 pupils study the period 1066-1500, with topics
including the Norman Conquest, Crusades and Castles. In the
summer term of year 7 all boys visit Portchester Castle as
part of an Activities Week which also involves the
Geography, English and R.S. departments in the school. In
year 8 boys study the period 1500-1850, with topics
including Henry VIII, the Gunpowder Plot and the English
Civil War. In year 9 students cover 20th century
topics such as the two World Wars.
At
GCSE, pupils study the AQA History specification B Modern
World course (3042), which includes depth studies on 20th
Century Russia/USSR and Germany, aspects of the Cold War
1945-1991 and controlled assessment based on Britain at War
in both world wars. |

|
 |
To consolidate this, boys have the opportunity to visit the
Imperial War Museum and the National Army Museum in year 10,
and in the autumn term of year 11 they can join one of the
two 3 day visits run by the department to the 1st World War
battlefields in Belgium and France.
|
For Year 12 the department offers two parallel courses, taken from
AQA specification. Students choose either AS units in ‘Europe and
the Crusades 1095-1204’ and ‘Britain and the loss of the American
Colonies 1763-1783’, leading to A2 units in ‘the Crisis of Stuart
Government 1625-1688’ and a Personal Study based on Warfare
c.1815-c1941 (collectively called ‘War and Empire, 1095-1941’); or,
‘Mussolini and Italy 1922-1945’ and ‘Britain 1906-1951’, leading to
A2 units in ‘Aspects of International Relations, 1945–2004’ and the
same unit of Personal Study on Warfare c.1815-c1941 (collectively
called “Twentieth Century History”).
