Philosophy
Bournemouth School is a Specialist Language College and as such is
strongly committed to encouraging modern language study for all
within the context of a broad curriculum. It recognises the
importance of both language acquisition and awareness of other
cultures as important contributions to Global Citizenship, and
places the Languages Department at the heart of developments in this
area.
The study of a language is a compulsory component of the curriculum throughout
key stages 3 and 4, and continued study is strongly encouraged in
the sixth form.
Scope
All pupils study French and Latin on entry to the school in year 7, and then
select either German, Mandarin or Spanish as an additional subject
in year 8.
All pupils study at least one language throughout key stage 4, and
are encouraged to study additional languages. French, German,
Latin, Mandarin, Spanish and Italian are the established GCSE
courses.
Sixth Form courses are offered at AS and A2 level in French, German,
Latin and Spanish, and enrichment courses in French, German and Spanish
for Business, GCSE Italian, beginners Japanese and beginners Chinese
as General Studies options.
We are particularly proud to
be one of the few schools in the South West of England to offer
Latin at GCSE and A-level. Further details of our provision
may be found under Latin.
A variety of after school classes at beginner and continuer level
(currently in Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin,
Portuguese and Spanish) provide free access for our pupils to
curriculum enrichment as well as serving the needs of the local
community.
Exchanges and study tours to France, Germany and Spain further
enrich the languages curriculum. Increasing numbers of staff and
older students (through the Foreign Languages Leaders Award) are
involved with outreach work in twelve local primary schools.
Human Resources
The department is well staffed by a team of specialists including
several native speakers. There are currently thirteen full and four
part time teaching staff teaching classes within the school day,
together with a part time team covering the extended day classes.
Four foreign language assistants support work in French, German,
Spanish and Mandarin.
Administrative support is provided by our central team, including
specific language college support.
The school subscribes to CILT and ALL , and makes substantial use of
training and resource opportunities from these organisations, the
LEA and the network of Specialist Schools.
