National Senior Students Tennis
Champions 2009
Bournemouth School returned victorious
from the National Schools Senior Students Tennis competition this
weekend after two days of matches held in the Bolton Arena, the
culmination of an event which began in October 2008.
Following early round successes in the
Area Leagues, the Regional Knock Out phase saw the team of four beat
Torquay Boys Grammar School and Beechen Cliff School to move to the
Finals where, in a format similar to that of the Davis Cup with on
court Captains guiding their players, the Bournemouth boys won a
further three matches to gain a coveted place in the match to decide
the eventual winner.
In a tough fixture against some
determined opposition, the Bournemouth School team played their way
to the National title by four rubbers to two. The team members
are:
David Hill, Ahria Roushanbakhti, Jack Joyce, Jonathan Guberman (Captain), Eamon
Boyce,
Mr Nigel Oates (Team Manager).

Training School Status
We have just received notification
from the DCSF that our plans have been accepted for us to become
a Training School
as an additional specialism. This option was made available to
us under the High Performing Specialist Schools scheme and will
come into operation from 1st April 2009.
Training School status will open up to the school a range of
additional opportunities in support of our ongoing school
improvement plan and will also help us to strengthen the links
that already exist between Bournemouth School and its partner
schools in Bournemouth.
New Headmaster – Dr Dorian P Lewis
CChem MRSC

Since September when Mr Granger announced his intention to retire at
the end of the current academic year, the Governing Body has been
engaged in finding his replacement. We were seeking a headteacher to
lead Bournemouth School through the ever-changing education
landscape of the twenty-first century.
We advertised and received an encouraging response from a large
number of high calibre candidates. After a rigorous process of
testing and interviewing an outstanding leader emerged –
Dr Dorian P Lewis.
Dr Lewis obtained his PhD in Chemistry from the University of
Southampton, before training as a teacher at Nottingham University.
His teaching career began at the Thomas Hardye School in Dorchester,
before becoming the Head of Science and then Deputy Headteacher at
Queen Elizabeth’s School in Wimborne. He has extensive experience
in curriculum development, target-setting, improving the quality of
teaching and learning, and in raising students’ self esteem and
aspirations. Dr Lewis is married and has three young children. He
and his family are looking forward to moving into the area from
their present home in North Dorset.
Dr Lewis will be taking office from the beginning of September 2009
and I am sure he will enjoy the help and co-operation of the wider
community surrounding Bournemouth School during the run-up period
and thereafter.

UNDER THE CLOCKTOWER
APPEAL

Those of you who are old enough to remember earlier issues of
this newsletter may recall it was previously entitled: ‘UNDER THE
CLOCKTOWER’.
Unfortunately the clock tower that has been the dominating feature
of the East Way school building since 1939 (a building that will be
70 years old next year) is in a very poor state of repair and in
need of a major overhaul or rebuild.
It was agreed at a recent Old Boy’s committee meeting that we should
ask whether you would be prepared to help (with any size of
donation), to raise an estimated amount of £5000 to save the Clock
tower, with the Association donating the first £1000 towards that
target.
Most of us have fond memories of East Way, and the school without
the Clock-tower is unimaginable. Will you help? Any amount will be
gratefully received and faithfully applied. Please make cheques
payable to the ‘Old Bournemouthians’ Association’ and write
‘Clocktower Fund’ on the reverse.
Please send all donations to: The Treasurer, Old
Bournemouthians, C/O Bournemouth School.
Thank you for your support.
